After a two-year association with the marvelous staff at the historic Masonic Temple, SJC is making yet another move in upping the ante in support of classic jazz. Effective December 3, 2018, all SJC performances will be held at the Dante Club, located at 2330 Fair Oaks Blvd., Sacramento. Today’s Dante Club is not the club of yesterday that may come to mind.
With ample parking, and warm, intimate atmosphere, Dante Club Executive Director, Allison Nord, and I are committed to providing the classic environment for classic jazz. Instead of 6:30 PM, doors will now be open to the public at 6 PM where we will offer a light dinner menu before the show.
Many of you have asked, and regrettably, SJC will not have a New Year’s Eve function this year. That said, Vivian Lee will kick off a Christmas show on December 3rd to get you in the holiday spirit. So get those tickets. Following, comes the John Stowell Quartet, Dave Bass Quartet, Joe Massaferro Septet, Akira Tana with Kenny Washington Sextet, Libby York with Joe Gilman Trio, Harley White Jr. , Jim Martinez, Kim Nally and Tammy Lynne Hall, and others. Also, we are asking all members to save the date of February 4, 2019, when we bring “ dinner jazz” for Members Only. So for anyone on the fence about joining, now is the time.
In the meantime, let’s not forget that we have seven wonderful shows left at the Masonic. This Monday, October 8, 2018, we have Joe Gilman paying tribute to Oscar Peterson’s 1970s acclaimed album, “Another Day,” a rare, first-time performance of this album by Joe. On the 15th we have the music of Amos Hoffman and Noam Lemish who all the way from New York city have included SJC on their west coast tour. On the 22nd we have Steve and Francesca Homan with the music of the American and Brazilian Standard Songbooks, and on the 29th back by popular demand, are the Five Guitars. Many of you have boxed the four October shows for the price of three. This offer will end on Monday, so there’s still time if you want to take advantage of the offer.
Moving on to November, we start on November 5th, with “Slide” featuring the four trombones of Al Bent, Fritz Heilbron, Phil Tulga, and David Bowman, with Darius, Babazadeh, Mat Marucci, Chet Chwalik, and Kerry Kashiwagi…we admit, that is some band…on the 12th SJCs own Beth Duncan performs the music of Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Martine Tabilio with “Bergman and Tabilio, and on the 26th we close out the Masonic run with the Byron Colborn Big Band before moving to the Dante. So, as you can see, lots is going on. Thank you for your support over these last two years and as we move forward, here’s a toast to the music!
